    Hi all,

I sourced a couple of motors from up in the hills around Mt. Wellington in Hobart. I dragged all the rusted crud into my ladies wagon and cautiously drove home. 2 g/boxes 2 engines a swag of parts and tools etc. I estimate 300-400Kg of stuff.

Anyway, one engine is [b:sfra163z]FC82402HE[/b:sfra163z] and I knew it came out of a mk2 spitfire BUT another engine almost identical in external appearence was with it. It’s engine number is [b:sfra163z]KA1070[/b:sfra163z]. It has the same stroke as a 1200 Spitfire but the pistons are smaller. The main crank bearings are in the same places but the points where the rod big-ends connect are spaced differently to the crank from the spitfire 1200 motor. I figure it’s 948cc and a Herald motor. There were Herald parts lying around near the motor when I found it.

I’ve checked every list I can find but see no items with KA as the number. Now it’s possible that someone planed the block and restamped the number. Maybe they meant to put GA on it which would be a 1200 Herald – but clearly the motor is not 1200cc.

[b:sfra163z]Does anyone know what a KA motor is out of?[/b:sfra163z]

    Hi,
KA and KB prefixes were stamped on Australian 948cc Heralds. KA very early and KB from 1960 or 61. I have found a web site that backs this up at http://www.vtr.org/Herald/Herald-hickman.shtml
I thought I had seen it elsewhere on the web but cant find it right now.
Back in the early days of the Standard Vanguard Car Club of Victoria, it was "common folk law/knowledge/old wives tale" that KA and KB were 948s.
This is about the best I can do. Hope it helps.
    Regards
    Doug
